The IEEE PES-IAS Chapter, Pune Section, in collaboration with the IAS Student Branch Chapter at Bharati Vidyapeeth (Deemed to be University) College of Engineering, Pune, successfully organized an expert lecture on the occasion of IEEE Day. The session featured Dr. Sivaneasan Bala Krishnan, an IEEE IAS Distinguished Lecturer and Deputy Director at the Singapore Institute of Technology.

The session commenced with a warm welcome and introduction by Dr. Tanuja S. Dhope, who set the context for an in-depth discussion on modern maintenance strategies in industrial and commercial systems. Dr. Krishnan delivered an engaging presentation highlighting the evolution from traditional maintenance practices to data-driven, condition-based maintenance approaches. Key takeaways included:

  • Importance of robust asset maintenance: Proactive maintenance ensures safety, reliability, and economic viability while preventing catastrophic failures and maximizing operational uptime.
  • Limitations of traditional maintenance techniques: Manual or schedule-based methods can be inefficient, costly, and prone to unexpected breakdowns.
  • Opportunities and challenges of condition-based maintenance: Real-time monitoring and predictive analytics offer significant benefits but require investment, data integration, and workforce training.
  • Application of advanced data analytics: Machine learning algorithms can detect subtle anomalies in electrical systems, enabling preemptive interventions before faults occur.
  • Case studies: Examples from high-voltage power transmission and low-voltage commercial systems demonstrated the scalability and effectiveness of modern detection techniques.

The lecture concluded with a formal vote of thanks by Aditya Raj, who summarized the key insights and expressed gratitude to Dr. Krishnan for sharing his expertise.
