Lecture Title: Cyber Security in Power System Operation

Speaker Bio: Mr. Praveen Kumar Agarwal started his career as an Executive Trainee of NTPC in 1981. Later, joined Powergrid and retired in June 2020 as the Director and Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) of Grid Controller of India Ltd. Mr. Agarwal brings over 44 years of experience in the power sector. Mr. Agarwal is currently working as an advisor and consultant for national and international organizations, including Tetra Tech-USA, Innovative Wind Energy-USA, Entruist Power-India, and Kalkitech-India, in areas such as electricity markets, digitalization, and cybersecurity. During his tenure at Grid-India, he achieved several milestones, including WAMS, Real-time Market, NOAR, REMC, etc. He published numerous technical papers and articles in national and international journals, contributed chapters to books published by Springer, USA, and IET, UK, and delivered talks at numerous international and National conferences and panel sessions. Mr. Agarwal is member of various national and international working groups for the development of technical reports, standards, and guidelines related to the power sector. Member of the expert working group on system operation for the development of “India Energy Stack” of the Ministry of Power, GoI, India.

Topic Abstract: Cybersecurity has become a vital pillar of reliability and resilience in modern power system operations. With the increasing digitalisation of grid infrastructure, integration of distributed energy resources, and deployment of advanced control and communication technologies, the power sector faces mounting exposure to cyber threats.

This presentation covers essential concepts and practical strategies for cybersecurity in the power sector. Participants will learn about common vulnerabilities in control centres, SCADA systems, and substation automation. Real-world case studies will demonstrate how cyber incidents can disrupt grid reliability, highlighting the importance of vigilance and preparedness. The session covers foundational security standards, guidelines, and relevant CEA norms—and explains how they apply to daily operations workflows.
