EXPRESSIONS: Debate Competition  & Painting Activity, an IEEE DAY social activity and competition.


The EXPRESSIONS commenced with an exciting Debate Competition, marking the perfect beginning to a day full of intellect, articulation, and spirited exchange of ideas. The event provided participants with a platform to express their perspectives on socially and ethically significant issues, encouraging critical thinking, reasoning, and persuasive communication.Participants were divided into teams representing “for” and “against” the motion, and each round was designed to evaluate their clarity of thought, confidence, and ability to construct logical arguments under time constraints. The competition witnessed thought-provoking discussions, respectful rebuttals, and insightful viewpoints that kept both the judges and audience deeply engaged.

◆ Round 1: Debate on “Most of the world’s richest women inherited their wealth — does this reflect women’s limitations or society’s barriers?”

Format: Two teams competed, presenting arguments for and against the motion.

Focus: The round aimed to assess participants’ analytical thinking, understanding of gender dynamics, and ability to justify viewpoints with logic and evidence.

Outcome: The team with stronger arguments, rebuttals, and presentation skills advanced to the next round.

 

◆ Round 2: Debate on “Should alimony be gender neutral?”

Format: Another two teams debated the motion, highlighting perspectives from both legal and social viewpoints.

Focus: Participants discussed fairness, equality, and modern interpretations of gender roles within marital laws.

Outcome: The best-performing team, based on content, clarity, and convincing rebuttals, qualified for the final round.

 

◆ Round 3: The Grand Finale — “Who faces more societal pressure: Men or Women?”

Format: The final two teams faced off in the concluding round. Each side was assigned a stance — one supporting men and the other women.

Focus: The round tested participants’ ability to think critically on sensitive societal issues, defend their side confidently, and engage in respectful yet powerful counterarguments.

Outcome: The final verdict was based on overall articulation, confidence, and strength of arguments, crowning the most persuasive team as the winners of the Debate Competition.
