[Legacy Report] Commercialization of research: models and examples


The famous financier J. P. Morgan once quipped, “Money equals business
which equals power, all of which come from character and trust.” Talk to
any venture capitalist today, and they will similarly say that they invest
in people, and trust that the technology can work. But given a choice of
avenues for research, which are more likely to have commercial potential?
This talk will cover many examples of research that has been
commercialized (successfully or otherwise), looking at what features of a
problem (or a potential solution) tend to lead to commercial success, with
particular attention to how the business manager sees research ideas.
