WIE + Life Members: Give Blood, Give Life 🩸
This Thanksgiving, we're supporting our local community.
Did you know that blood donations drop sharply around the holidays? Join IEEE NoVA’s Women in Engineering, together with IEEE NoVA Life Members, for our Thanksgiving Blood Drive, a week-long effort to give the gift of life to our community.
The drive kicks off at 12:00 PM on Saturday, November 22, at Inova Blood Donor Services – Woodburn Medical Center. Stop by for seasonal treats, stickers, and the company of friends while you donate or learn about upcoming IEEE events in the area. Can’t make the kickoff? No problem—our group blood drive continues through Wednesday, November 26, so you can still contribute if another time works better for you.

A code will be provided for blood donors who would like to donate after our kickoff time.
The code works until November 26th. Please register for our event to obtain our group code.

🩸 Preparing for your appointment:

🥤Hydrate well! Drink plenty of water the day before and the day of your donation. Being well-hydrated makes your veins easier to find and helps prevent lightheadedness.

🍲 Eat a good meal: Have a balanced meal 2–3 hours before donating, rich in iron (spinach, red meat, beans, fortified cereals).

🛌 Get a good night’s sleep: Being well-rested supports healthy blood volume and recovery.

🪪 Bring your ID to the appointment!

👕 Wear short sleeves or sleeves that can be rolled up easily to make donating more comfortable.
During Donation:

🧘 Relax! Breathe normally, and chat with staff if you feel nervous.

⌚️ The donation itself only takes about 10 minutes; the whole process takes 45–60 minutes including screening and rest.
Afterward:

🍪🧃 Rest for a few minutes and enjoy the snacks and drinks provided.

🥤 Keep hydrating for the next 24 hours and avoid alcohol.

⛔️ Skip strenuous exercise or heavy lifting for the rest of the day.

❤️🩹 Leave the bandage on for a few hours to prevent bruising.
