The Koopman Operator: A Linear Perspective for Nonlinear System Analysis and Modeling |

Dr. Enrico ZERO Department of Informatics, Bioengineering, Robotics and Systems Engineering (DIBRIS), University of Genoa |
Abstract:
The Koopman operator framework offers a powerful perspective for studying nonlinear dynamical systems. It provides a linear - though infinite-dimensional - representation of nonlinear phenomena. This enables spectral analysis techniques and data-driven approximations that can reveal dominant patterns and coherent structures. In this seminar, I will introduce the foundations of Koopman operator theory and its connection to modern data-driven methods. Emphasis will be placed on Dynamic Mode Decomposition (DMD) and extensions, which allow tractable finite-dimensional approximations from data. Applications in fluid flows, robotics, and power systems will illustrate how Koopman-based methods enable new approaches to modeling, prediction, and control-oriented reduction.
Speaker short bio:
Enrico Zero received the Ph.D. in Systems Engineering for safety in transport systems from the University of Genoa in 2022. His research focuses on monitoring, modeling, and controlling multi-agent systems with emphasis on autonomy, coordination, and safety. He develops resilient solutions for dynamic and uncertain environments through decentralized control, heterogeneous sensor integration, and predictive modeling that combines data-driven and physics-based approaches. Applications include autonomous vehicles, sensor networks, and hazardous materials logistics, with additional work on anomaly detection, sensor fusion, and predictive maintenance for intelligent transport systems.
