[IEEE CSS Italy Chapter Seminar Series @ Poliba – Fall 2025] Using Distributed Control to Enhance Cyber-Physical Energy Systems - Dr. Bianca CAIAZZO, Universitas Mercatorum
Abstract:
“Using distributed control to enhance cyber-physical energy systems” refers to the exploitation of distributed control theory and multi-agent systems modelling approach in the context of future smart power and energy systems, which can be regarded as cyber-physical energy system in a networked control system perspective. By exploiting the information sharing among the spatially distributed systems and only neighbour-to-neighbour communication, cooperative control strategies are currently gaining momentum since they represent a superior alternative in terms of flexibility, reliability and scalability with respect to conventional centralized control approaches. Despite the benefits, the control over communication networks poses several issues, such as time delays, cyber-attacks and waste of communication/computation resources, including workload between controllers and related actuators. What’s more, modern distributed controllers implementation only permits digital information dissemination, which leads to the need of moving from continuous-time to sampled-data control design, where signal sampling, control updates and data transmission only happen at discrete-time instants. In this perspective, this talk aims at presenting the last results achieved on this topic along with the related Lyapunov-Krasovskii-based stability guarantees and real-time validations.
Speaker short bio:
Bianca Caiazzo received the Ph.D. in Automatic Control from the University of Naples Federico II, Naples, Italy, in May 2023, where she was Post-doctoral Researcher till 2025. She is currently Tenure Track Researcher (RTT) at Universitas Mercatorum, Rome, Italy, and member of the Distributed Automation Systems Lab (DAiSYLab) at the University of Naples Federico II (https://daisylab.dieti.unina.it). During her career, she was also visiting researcher at Tel Aviv University (TAU), Israel. Her research interests include the design of distributed control strategies for multi-agent systems, particularly in the presence of communication issues such as delays, cyber-attacks, and link failures. She applies these theoretical frameworks to various real-world domains, ranging from Smart Grids to Intelligent Transportation Systems. Bianca is also a co-founder and member of the academic spin-off Distributed Automation System Solutions (DAS2) (https://www.das2.it).
