IEEE Day -2025 celebration - Advancing technology for Humanity
Two insightful sessions were held recently under the IEEE banner, offering participants valuable perspectives on both the technological future of artificial intelligence and the strategic growth of IEEE student branches. The first session titled,“Benefits, Strategies for Effective Leadership and Growth of IEEE Student Branches”, was delivered by Dr. Venkatesha Muniswamy, Professor and HOD at Sai Vidya Institute of Technology, during a leadership development event at Aditya College, Bangalore. The second, titled “Agentic AI”, was presented by Ms. Prajna Rama Murthy, Software
Developer at IBM India Software Labs, during IEEE Day 2025 at the IEEE BIT Student Branch. Agentic AI is an artificial intelligence system that can accomplish a specific goal with limited supervision. It consists of AI agents — ML models that mimic human decision-making to solve problems in real time.
Session 1: Leadership and Growth of IEEE Student Branches. The first session, conducted by Dr. Venkatesha Muniswamy, shifted focus from technology to leadership. His presentation highlighted the importance of effective organization, collaboration, and vision in ensuring the growth and sustainability of IEEE student branches. Dr. Venkatesha began by revisiting the origins and mission of IEEE, tracing its evolution from the American Institute of Electrical Engineers (AIEE) and the Institute of Radio Engineers (IRE) to the global professional network it represents today. He described how IEEE now connects over 500,000 members worldwide and serves as a central hub for research, education, and innovation across diverse domains — from robotics and AI to sustainable energy and healthcare technology. The presentation also showcased the achievements of the IEEE Bangalore Section, which stands as one of India’s most vibrant and active branches, hosting numerous technical societies, student branches, and professional groups. Dr. Venkatesha elaborated on the benefits of IEEE membership, such as access to research publications, scholarships, travel grants, and leadership opportunities. He also outlined funding opportunities available to student branches and societies, emphasizing that with strategic planning and collaboration, student groups can access up to $50,000 (INR 45 lakhs) in annual funding for activities and events.
Session 2: Agentic AI – The Next Step Beyond Generative Intelligence Ms. Prajna Rama Murthy’s talk focused on the evolution of artificial intelligence from generative models to agentic systems — a shift that marks the beginning of AI systems capable not only of
responding to prompts but of acting autonomously to achieve defined goals. She introduced Agentic AI as a new paradigm where AI agents can plan, make decisions, and execute actions independently, blending the creativity of generative AI with the precision and logic of traditional programming. The presentation explained how AI assistants differ from AI agents: assistants are reactive, working within user-defined boundaries, while agents are proactive, capable of breaking tasks into smaller goals and learning from their experiences through persistent memory and adaptive feedback.Ms. Prajna also discussed how IBM is leading advancements in this field, leveraging foundation models and large language models (LLMs) to create intelligent systems that can operate dynamically in real-world environments.
