Come join us for IEEE NB's Annual General Meeting (AGM)!

There will be brief presentations from executive members, an invited speaker (Dr. Hong Chen, UNB Assistant Professor and CISCO Research Chair in IoT), and opportunities to network with like-minded tech professionals and enthusiasts.

Snacks and refreshments will be provided.

Hope to see you there!

Chris Rouse, IEEE NB Section Chair

Topic:

Facilitate the Transition: From Traditional Communications to Intelligent Communications and Advanced Computing

Emerging intelligent Internet of Things (IoT) systems, such as autonomous driving, augmented reality/virtual reality (AR/VR), and smart homes, generate massive data volumes and impose stringent latency requirements that traditional communications struggle to meet. Next-generation intelligent communication networks are therefore essential. Mobile edge computing (MEC) is a cornerstone of this transition, bringing cloud computing closer to end devices to deliver low-latency, energy-efficient execution, and pushing cloud-based intelligence to edge servers to enable distributed edge artificial intelligence (AI). As an AI-driven communication paradigm, semantic communications can fully leverage Edge AI to effectively transmit only task-relevant information rather than raw data, reducing data traffic load and significantly mitigating spectrum scarcity. This talk will also introduce a novel edge-assisted semantic communications framework and effective methodologies that address key challenges in building Edge AI-empowered semantic communication networks.

Biography:

Dr. Hong Chen is an Assistant Professor and the Cisco Research Chair in IoT with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE), University of New Brunswick (UNB), Fredericton, NB, Canada, from Jul. 2025. Her research interests include AI-driven wireless communication networks, with a particular focus on semantic communication, edge intelligence, digital twin-assisted networking. Before joining UNB, she was a Postdoctoral Associate with the Department of ECE, Western University, London, ON, Canada, from Nov. 2023. She received the Ph.D. degree in ECE from McMaster University, Hamilton, ON, Canada, in 2023. She has published high-quality research papers in top-tier journals and conference proceedings (e.g., IEEE Commun. Stand. Mag., JIoT, TCOM, TMC, TGCN, and IEEE ICC, WCNC, PIMRC). She is/was a TPC member for several flagship international conferences (e.g., IEEE ICC, Globecom, INFOCOM, VTC, PIMRC). Dr. Chen serves as a peer reviewer for prestigious magazines and journals, such as IEEE Commun. Mag., TWC, TCOM, TMC, JIoT, TVT.
