Seeking Equilibria in Nonconvex Games

Dr. Paolo SCARABAGGIO

Department of Electrical and Information Engineering (DEI), Polytechnic of Bari

Abstract:

Whenever a number of self-interested agents with individual dynamics and possibly competing objectives interact, game theory provides a natural framework to describe and analyze their behavior. From the earliest works, mathematical elegance and theoretical tractability have steered multi-agent decision-making models within the safe harbor of convexity (or concavity). This talk focuses on the existence and computation of equilibria in nonconvex noncooperative games, where classical convex-analytic tools fail to apply. A notion of local equilibrium is proposed, and its existence and stability are characterized. Two distributed fixed-point iterations are presented to compute such equilibria, with convergence proven under (strongly) monotone conditions. Finally, the talk explores a data-driven perspective, where agents are modeled with neural networks, a setting where convexity is inherently absent. A complementary topological framework is also presented, replacing convexity with homotopy conditions. Applications of these concepts to energy demand management are presented.

Speaker short bio:

Paolo Scarabaggio received a Ph.D. in Electrical and Information Engineering from Politecnico di Bari, Italy in 2022. He is currently an assistant professor (RTDA) at the Decision and Control Laboratory of Politecnico di Bari. In 2019, he visited the Delft Center for Systems and Control, Technical University of Delft, The Netherlands. His research interests include modeling, optimization, game theory, and control of complex multi-agent systems, with application in energy distribution systems, and social networks. He is author of 30+ printed international publications. He is the recipient of the 2022 IEEE CSS Italy Best Young Author Journal Paper Award.
