Advancing UAV-Based Remote Sensing and Applied Electromagnetics for Environmental Monitoring
The growing demand for timely and reliable environmental data requires innovative sensing technologies that can bridge the gap between ground-based measurements and satellite observations. My research focuses on developing compact, UAV-based remote sensing platforms that integrate Global Navigation Satellite System Reflectometry (GNSS-R) and microwave radiometry for high-resolution monitoring of soil moisture, vegetation water content, and hydrologic conditions. Future directions include building a radio-realistic electromagnetic simulator that incorporates real-world environments and supports multi- sensor data fusion, as well as establishing a UAV test facility at UA to accelerate sensor development and student training. This seminar will present an overview of my past and ongoing projects, highlight current challenges in UAV-based remote sensing, and outline a research vision aimed at advancing applied electromagnetics and autonomous sensing systems for global environmental monitoring.
Biography:
Md Mehedi Farhad is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at The University of Alabama. He earned his Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Mississippi State University. He was a NASA FINESST Fellow and a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Georgia, conducting research on UAV- and UGV-based remote sensing systems for soil moisture and vegetation monitoring. His expertise spans applied electromagnetics, signal processing, and uncrewed aircraft systems. Dr. Farhad’s research vision centers on advancing UAV-based remote sensing platforms and electromagnetic modeling tools to provide timely, reliable, and accessible environmental data for applications in agriculture, hydrology, and climate science.
