Topic:

History of Instrument Flight

The History of Instrument Flight is a story of how and why instruments became a central theme for safe flight.  The names of the main characters of this story have faded into the shadows of aviation medicine, but their work has been proven many times over, a necessity for manned flight in all weather conditions and at night (sans thunderstorms).  It is my desire to share this story with you, so you better appreciate what these few people accomplished.  More importantly, I want to give them recognition for what arguably is the most significant aeromedical discovery of the 20th Century.  Hope you enjoy it!

Biography:

Lt Col Bill Ercoline, USAF (retired) has an M.S. in Engineering Physics from AFIT and a Ph.D. in Engineering Management; has over 5,000 flight hours as pilot and instructor pilot in a variety of military and general aviation aircraft; was an associate professor of physics at the USAFA; and has more than forty years of research and management in the areas of spatial disorientation and laser eye protection.  After a military flying and teaching career, he retired in 1988 and worked under several contracts for USAFSAM and AFRL. He has published many articles about spatial disorientation countermeasures, and co-edited and co-authored the textbook Spatial Disorientation in Aviation.
