This seminar introduced students and young researchers to modern optimization at the intersection of logistics, energy systems, and telecommunications. Drawing from recent research and practical case studies, Dr. Slim Belhaiza discussed how operations research and mathematical modeling inform:

  • Vehicle routing optimization (from classical VRP to real-world variants with constraints such as time windows, capacity, and uncertainty),

  • Smart-grid demand response (modeling flexible loads, scheduling under constraints, and balancing user comfort with grid needs),

  • 5G & beyond network slicing (resource allocation, QoS requirements, and optimization-driven slicing policies).

The talk emphasized problem formulation, tractability vs. realism, and algorithmic choices (exact vs. heuristic/approximate), highlighting how modeling assumptions drive both solution quality and computational cost. Dr. Belhaiza also presented academic paths and collaboration opportunities at KFUPM for EPT students (research visits, graduate studies, and joint projects).

Target audience: undergraduate and graduate engineering students, early-career researchers, and IEEE volunteers interested in operations research, energy systems, and telecom optimization.

Optimization Across Logistics, Energy & Telecom

Biography:

Dr. Slim Belhaizais an Associate Professor of Mathematics at King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals (KFUPM), affiliated with the Interdisciplinary Research Center for Communications & Systems Sensing and the IRC for Smart Logistics & Mobility. He received an M.Sc. in Operations Research from HEC Montréal (2002) and a Ph.D. in Applied/Engineering Mathematics from Polytechnique Montréal (2008). Before joining KFUPM (initially as Assistant Professor), he worked in industry in Canada as an R&D Project Manager and Senior Operations Research Programmer/Analyst for an optimization company. His research focuses on vehicle routing and logistics optimization, demand response in smart grids, 5G (& beyond) network slicing, and algorithmic game theory. He has published in high-impact venues including the Journal of Optimization Theory and ApplicationsAutomaticaComputers & Operations Research, and IEEE Transactions on Smart Grid. Dr. Belhaiza is an active reviewer/referee for leading journals in AI, operations research, and IEEE publications.
