Abstract: In this talk, I will discuss emerging challenges in the control of microgrids incorporating energy storage systems, the associated research opportunities, and the strategies needed to prepare for these opportunities. The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence technologies, coupled with the growing emphasis on resilient and high-availability data centers, is driving a significant shift in power system requirements. Modern facilities increasingly impose stochastic, high-load, and high ramp-rate demands, creating unprecedented engineering and operational complexities.
Meeting these demands requires innovative microgrid architectures and advanced control methodologies capable of ensuring reliability, stability, and resilience under both normal operating conditions and extreme event scenarios. This presentation will examine how industry stakeholders are currently addressing these challenges, including the deployment of advanced storage technologies, predictive control algorithms, and grid-interactive operational frameworks.
Finally, I will highlight key research directions with the potential to support this rapidly evolving energy ecosystem. These include new methods for real-time optimization, resilience-oriented system design, AI-enabled control, and robust integration of distributed energy resources. Together, these developments represent a critical opportunity to build next-generation power systems capable of sustaining the accelerating computational and infrastructural demands of the future.
