Talk: Multimodal Perception and Communication in Social Human-Robot Interaction

Speaker:   Dr. Tuyen Nguyen

New Frontiers Fellow (Lecture)
University of Southampton

Tuyen Nguyen is a New Frontiers Fellow in AI at the School of Electronics and Computer Science, University of Southampton. He received his PhD degree in Information Science, specialising in Robotics, from the Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology. His research centres on Human-centred AI, Socially Assistive Robots, and their applications to human–AI and human–robot interaction. His work in this field has been recognised with several research awards, including the Honourable Mention Award at the ICCV UDIVA Challenge 2021, the Best Paper Award at the IEEE RO-MAN 2022, the Prospective Research Award at the ICServ 2023, and the Best Paper Award at the FETC 2025.

Abstract:
Multimodal interaction plays an indispensable role in human communication. In addition to speech, people tend to use a wide range of non-verbal channels, including eye gaze, body, and facial gestures, etc. to communicate their emotions and intentions to their interacting partners. Such social signals encourage verbal messages of the communicator can be transmitted to other interlocutors in a facile and transparent manner. Inspired by this, in human–robot interaction, multimodal communication is equally crucial, enabling robots and AI agents to interpret human input from multiple sensory channels and to reason about appropriate responses through diverse communication modalities. This talk will introduce our recent efforts in integrating multimodal perception and communication capabilities into social robots across different human–robot interaction scenarios.
