BMSCE IEEE PES & Sensors Council, in collaboration with IEEE PES Bangalore Chapter and DSCE IEEE PES SBC, conducted a hands-on Embedded Systems Development Workshop focusing on microcontrollers, interfacing, and embedded programming.

The workshop was led by Mr. Gokulmuthu Narayanaswamy, Mr. Kshitij Sharma, and Mr. Linto VJ, all from Itron, Bangalore.

Mr. Gokulmuthu Narayanaswamy, who also serves as the Execom Coordinator for IEEE PES Bangalore Chapter, initiated the session and guided the participants through the conceptual understanding of embedded systems. He coordinated the workshop end-to-end and invited his colleagues Mr. Kshitij Sharma and Mr. Linto VJ to support the hands-on demonstrations and technical mentoring throughout the event.

Participants worked extensively with ESP8266 (NodeMCU) microcontroller. The speakers demonstrated environment setup, hardware connections, and coding techniques while ensuring each participant progressed through practical tasks successfully.

The technical sessions covered both microcontrollers, guiding participants through environment setup, code development, interfacing, debugging, and real-time hardware validation.

ESP8266 Module

  • Digital output: Internal LED blinking

  • Interfacing external LED & buzzer

  • PWM-based LED fading

  • Analog input using LDR and Serial Plotter

  • Digital input using push buttons

  • 4-key piano using buzzer frequencies

  • OLED display (I2C) interfacing

  • Creating a WiFi access point and hosting a basic web server to control LED over browser

The workshop aimed not to replace formal coursework but to spark student interest in embedded development and IoT by using practical, real-world hardware.

Impact made:

The workshop provided participants with foundational knowledge of embedded systems and IoT, enabling them to:

  • Understand microcontroller architecture (ESP8266)

  • Gain confidence in hardware interfacing and peripheral control

  • Build complete mini-projects from scratch (LED controller, piano, web server, OLED display)

  • Set up and troubleshoot development environments independently

  • Develop interest in pursuing advanced projects in IoT, robotics, and embedded product design

Participants left with hands-on skills, improved technical confidence, and a clear understanding of how embedded systems connect software with real-world hardware.
