(IEEE STEM Portal Grant) TryEngineering OnCampus: Coding Adventures with Arduino
Coding Adventures with Arduino is a hands-on program designed to introduce students to the exciting fields of coding, electronics, and innovation. Through engaging, project-based learning, students gain valuable technical skills while fostering creativity, problem solving, and collaboration. At the core of this program is Arduino, an open-source microcontroller. The program aimed at 60 secondary school students, aged 14–15 from two different districts, which are MRSM Beseri and MRSM Arau. The program aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goal 4 (Quality Education).
The participants were divided into 15 groups, with 4 students in each group. The program was divided into two sessions. The first session was an introduction to basic programming, guided by prepared modules. It begins with an introduction to the Arduino IDE, basic circuits, and simple coding commands, for example how to control electronic components such as LEDs, sensors, motors, and buzzers. Then, in the second session, as the students progressed, they were given more complex projects (group work), such as designing automated systems, creating motion-activated devices (Pikabot).
The event was supported by 20 volunteers including 9 IEEE volunteers and hosted at the MEMS Lab, Faculty of Electronic Engineering & Technology, Universiti Malaysia Perlis, which provides computers and resources. Overall, the program is not only about coding but also gives valuable hands-on experience and increases confidence, understanding, and interest in STEM-related learning and innovation.
This student workshop is funded by the IEEE STEM Portal Grant 2025 under IEEE Computer Society and organized as part of IEEE TryEngineering OnCampus at the Universiti Malaysia Perlis
