The technical lecture “Multifunctional Inverters, Smart Microgrids and Model Predictive Control” was held on 26 November 2025 at 16:30 at the ESAN Auditorium, UFMS. The talk was delivered by Dr. Jakson Paulo Bonaldo, an expert in power electronics, smart microgrids and model predictive control, with academic experience at UNICAMP, UTFPR, UFMT and as a visiting researcher at the University of Nottingham (UK). The event was organized by the IEEE PELS UFMS Student Chapter, in collaboration with PPGEE/UFMS and BATLAB.

During the lecture, Dr. Bonaldo presented the fundamentals and recent advances in model predictive control (MPC) for power converters and electrical drives, highlighting key references and state-of-the-art research results. He discussed the design of finite control set MPC, weighting factor selection and implementation aspects in real converters.

The presentation also covered multifunctional inverters and their role in smart microgrids, with special emphasis on distributed control applied to islanded microgrids, power quality improvement and the integration of renewable energy sources. Practical examples and case studies were shown to illustrate how these control strategies can enhance reliability, flexibility and efficiency in modern power systems.

At the end, there was a Q&A session and informal networking, allowing students and faculty to interact with the speaker, clarify technical questions and explore research opportunities in power electronics and microgrid control.
