Intelligent Power Distribution Systems: Medium Voltage Switchgear and Protective Relays

Large Commercial and Industrial Facilities, including factories, convention centers, universities, data centers, and hospitals, distribute electricity at medium voltages ranging from 4,160 Volts to 34,500 Volts using Medium Voltage Switchgear. To increase reliability, the complexity of the power systems has and will increase significantly with the addition of multiple sources of power.  Reliability depends on the frequency of failures and the time to repair a faulted segment of the distribution system and on selectivity, which is the ability of a power system to disconnect only the faulted segment.

This course will describe Intelligent Power Distribution Systems that utilize networks and programmable logic controllers, taking advantage of the state-of-the-art of protective relays and other equipment to significantly enhance the reliability of the power distribution system.
The course also describes voltage transient issues that can be caused by vacuum circuit breakers that are closely coupled to medium voltage transformers in Unit Substations, and how these issues can be overcome without the use of RC Snubbers.

Intelligent Power Distribution Systems replace the present need for Paper Drawings and will substantially reduce the time to identify and isolate the faulted segment of a Medium Voltage Power Distribution System by hours or even days. They do this by providing real time information on the location of the faulted segment and real time One Line Diagrams.

Joseph F. Maida, PE

Topic:

Intelligent Power Distribution Systems: Medium Voltage Switchgear and Protective Relays

Biography:

Joseph is currently working on multiple power system projects that have medium and high voltage electrical services, medium voltage distribution systems, and use or will use state-of-the-art protective relays. These projects will take advantage of the enhanced capabilities and the connectivity of equipment that will define how

Joseph has a BSEE and MSEE in Electrical Engineering, has Professional Engineering Licenses in twenty-eight (26) states, is a LEED Accredited Professional, was the electrical engineer for the Pennsylvania Uniform Construction Code Review and Advisory Council from 2009 to 2011, and holds US Patent - US 10,765,958 for System, method, and apparatus for power limited sky diving wind tunnel drive train/fan.

Prior to starting Maida Engineering, Inc, Joseph was a licensed electrical contractor in the City of Philadelphia, worked for Day and Zimmerman, Inc. and Delmarva Power and Light Company, all of which contributed to enhancing his knowledge of electrical power systems.

Joseph founded Maida Engineering, Inc. in 1978 and attributes a large percentage the numerous opportunities it has had to Joseph’s past, present and on-going knowledge of electrical power distribution systems. These opportunities have resulted in and still contribute to engineering, design, and system integration projects throughout the Unites States.
