An overview of the development of technologies that have taken us from distant communications via line of sight smoke signals and semaphore, through breakthroughs in microwaves devices and their miniaturization that are today's telecommunications systems. Through the inventions in telephony, radio and TV, and computers as separate technologies, we have progressed to hand held devices that converge these different communication modes at a single point of contact with interactive text, voice, photos, video, internet, GPS, and regrettably for some, to our email. No longer tethered to a desk, instead we rely on cell towers and WiFi to interconnect us to the world.
