North Jersey VTS/Stevens Seminar: Great Fun of Advanced Statistical Theories: Theories and Applications

By Dr. Simon Pun, Mitsubishi Electric Research Labs (MERL), Cambridge, MA

Abstract: Statistical theories are commonly considered difficult and boring. In this talk, I will illustrate the fun side of statistical theories. I will first provide an intuitive introduction to three advanced statistical theories, namely optimal stopping theory, extreme value theory and change-point detection theory, followed by discussions on their applications in communications and smart grids. It is demonstrated that these theories can provide very practical and effective solutions to complicated engineering problems if used properly. This talk is intended for a general audience with some basic background in communications and signal processing while covering some material from two recent best paper awards (ICC'08 and Infocom'09).

Bio Sketch: Simon Pun received the BEng in Electronic Engineering from the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1996, the MEng. degree in Computer Science from University of Tsukuba, Japan in 1999 and the Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Southern California (USC) in 2006, respectively. He joined the Mitsubishi Electric Research Labs (MERL), Cambridge, MA as Research Scientist in 2008. Prior to MERL, he held research positions at Princeton University from 2006 to 2008 and Sony Corporation, Tokyo from 1999 to 2001. Dr. Pun received the MERL president's award in 2009 and three best paper awards from Infocom 2009, ICC 2008 and VTC-Fall 2006. He has served as associate editor of the IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications since 2010.
