In recent years, the rapid development of modern wireless communication technologies has imposed demands for miniaturization and high performance on radio frequency (RF) front-end circuit components. Band-pass filters based on dielectric resonators have become indispensable key devices in numerous wireless communication systems due to their unique advantages such as low loss, small size, light weight, and high power handling capacity, and have continuously attracted extensive attention from scholars at home and abroad.
Early reported single-mode dielectric resonant band-pass filters feature relatively simple structures and are easy to design. Subsequently, multimode dielectric resonators (e.g., dual-mode and triple-mode types) have gained significant popularity for their ability to further reduce the size and weight of filters. However, owing to the complex electromagnetic field distribution within multimode dielectric resonators, the mode coupling mechanism between dielectric resonators remains unclear, making it difficult to control the transmission zeros required for miniaturized high-performance band-pass filters at specified frequencies. Therefore, the precise design of multimode dielectric resonant band-pass filters remains a highly challenging research topic at present.
This report presents an 11th-order filter designed for future wireless communication base station applications, which boasts advantages including small volume, light weight, fully controllable bandwidth, and transmission zeros. The designed filter has been fabricated and experimentally tested, and the test results are highly consistent with theoretical predictions. This further validates the design concept of high-order fully coupled controllable band-pass filters based on multimode dielectric resonators.
