Living with Electronics: Designing Soft, Resorbable Materials for Next-Generation Healthcare
Next-generation healthcare calls for electronic systems that coexist with the human body and the natural environment rather than persist as rigid and permanent waste. These systems must be soft, resorbable, and fabricated from environmentally responsible materials. For healthcare they should match the mechanical properties of living tissues to reduce tissue damage and inflammation, while wireless and transient architectures eliminate hard connectors and the need for surgical removal. Beyond improving patient outcomes, such designs offer a pathway toward greener electronics by minimizing material use, enabling safe degradation, and
reducing long-term electronic waste. Realizing this vision requires a fundamental rethinking of the entire design cycle, from the development of new sustainable materials and low-impact fabrication processes to the form factors that define how devices interact with the body and the environment. By aligning healthcare innovation with principles of sustainability, living electronics can advance both human health and planetary well-being.
Biography:
Shweta Agarwala is full Professor and Associate Dean at the School of Engineering and
Applied Science at Ahmedabad University, India where she leads the pioneering Green
Materials and Devices Laboratory. Her interdisciplinary work focuses on the development of
sustainable electronic materials and devices, with a vision to drive environmental
responsibility in electronics through the creation of fully biodegradable and flexible devices.
She earned her PhD from the National University of Singapore and was a tenured professor at
Aarhus University, Denmark. An IGSTC WISER grant recipient, co-founder of successful
startups in Singapore and Denmark and author of over 80 peer-reviewed Q1 journals, she is
also an active contributor to the scientific community. She is a senior IEEE member and is
dedicated to advancing gender diversity in engineering.
