We are pleased to invite your Organizational Unit and members to the 2025 IEEE Education Society Robotics Session Initiative, organized by the IEEE Education Society, IEEE Education Society Tunisia Section Chapter, and the local organizers of TSYP13. The session is organized by Dr. Hamadou Saliah-Hassane and animated on-site by M. Kayoum Djedidi in Hammamet, Tunisia, as part of the Tunisian Student and Young Professionals Congress 2025, with remote participation enabled.

Biography:

 

Professor Saliah-Hassane holds a Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from McGill University in Montreal, a Bachelor degree and a Master of Applied Science degree from École Polytechnique de Montréal, Canada. He retired in 2024 as a full professor from TELUQ University in Montreal where he taught Computer Science and Computer Networks and Security courses. He was also the Head of the Electrical Engineering Department at the École des mines, de l'industrie et de la géologie (EMIG), an engineering school of the former Economic Community of West Africa (WAEC/CEAO) (1989-1991). He is now an Associate Professor in some other universities including University Abdou Moumouni in Niger and an Affiliate Professor at Florida Atlantic University in the USA. His research interests include intelligent distributed systems and mobile robotics. Professor Saliah-Hassane has chaired the Montreal IEEE Education Society Chapter (2005- 2022). He was the Past Vice President of IEEE Education Society Educational Activities and Awards (2023-2024) and also Past Chair of the IEEE Education Society Standards Committee (2010 - 2021). He is the Chair of the Working Group of the joint standardization activity on "Standard on Secure and Trusted Learning Systems" sponsored by the IEEE Education Society, the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society (IES), and the IEEE Computer Society Learning Technology Standards Committee (CS/LTSC) (2019 -2021) and (2025 - ).

Professor Saliah-Hassane has received many awards including The IEEE Education Society IEEE Education Society Distinguished Member Award for "distinguished long-term leadership, outstanding contributions and service to IEEE Education Society, especially with respect to its Standards development involving industry stakeholders and international graduate students”, The Latin American and Caribbean Consortium of Engineering Institutions (LACCEI) 2024 Medal of Academic Merit and the IEEE Education Society EdWin C. Jones, Jr. Meritorious Service Award (2019). And, consistent with his work in distributed embedded systems, the IEEE Standards Association's award with recognition for chairing and contributing to the development of IEEE Standard 1876™ - 2019 on "Networked Smart Learning Objects for Online Laboratories" (2019), the IEEE SA 2019 Emerging Technology Award to the IEEE SA 1876™ - 2019 Working Group.

Robotics Fundamentals

1. Robotics Fundamentals (15 min)

  • What defines a robot: autonomy, sensing, actuation, feedback
  • Classes of robots (mobile, manipulator, aerial, swarm, soft, educational)
  • Hardware stack overview: motors, drivers, microcontrollers, sensors, power
  • Control loops and behavior design (open-loop vs closed-loop)

2. Designing a Simple Robot (20 min)

  • Mechanical structure and chassis considerations
  • Power domains and safety
  • Motor driver basics (H-bridge, enable pins, PWM)
  • Microcontroller integration (Arduino-based LilyBot as example)
  • Walkthrough of assembly constraints using their materials

3. Coding the First Bot (20 min)

  • Dividing into teams and assembling the robot
  • Structure of the LilyBot codebase
  • MotionHelperFunctions.ino fundamentals
  • Basic behaviors: forward, turning, obstacle avoidance
  • Live explanation of wiring-dependent changes and debugging steps
  • Quick onsite demonstration

Biography:

Kayoum Djedidi is CEO and Co-founder of OORB – Open Organic Robotics, where he leads innovation at the intersection of organic robotics, hardware acceleration, and embedded systems. He is also a Hardware Acceleration & Embedded Systems Engineer and a PhD Candidate in Telecommunications at INRS, Montréal, with research interests spanning advanced computing architectures, intelligent systems, and next-generation communication technologies.

He is an IEEE Education Society Graduate Student, reflecting his strong engagement in engineering education, professional development, and student-centered innovation. Deeply involved in the IEEE community, he serves as Graduate Student Representative on the IEEE Aerospace and Electronic Systems Society (AESS) Board of Governors and as IEEE Industrial Electronics Society (IES) Young Professionals Activities Co-Chair (Media & New Initiatives). He is also an IEEE STEM Champion 2025, demonstrating his commitment to STEM outreach and global impact.

Kayoum Djedidi contributes to major international conferences and initiatives as IEEE ICCAD Publicity Chair, IEEE Tunisia Entrepreneurship Local Group Vice-Chair, and Chair of IEEE TSYP11. Previously, he served as Treasurer of the IEEE Education Society Tunisia Chapter, supporting governance, student engagement, and educational initiatives.

Through his combined roles as researcher, entrepreneur, and IEEE volunteer leader, he bridges cutting-edge research, technology transfer, and global professional service, with a strong focus on empowering young professionals, fostering entrepreneurship, and advancing impactful engineering solutions.
