IEEE PES Student Branch Chapter (SBC), Department of Electrical Engineering, JSPM’s Rajarshi Shahu College of Engineering, Pune, organized a one-day technical workshop titled “Inside the Electrical Cables and Wires: Practical Insights and Demonstrations” on Saturday, 27 December 2025, from 09:00 AM to 04:00 PM. The workshop aimed to provide in-depth practical knowledge and industrial exposure related to electrical cables and wires, which are critical components in power transmission, distribution, and industrial applications.

The primary objective of the workshop was to enhance students’ understanding of the internal construction, materials, insulation techniques, testing procedures, and safety standards of electrical cables, thereby bridging the gap between classroom learning and real-world industrial practices. The resource person for the workshop was Mr. Pradeep Ramrakhiani, Executive Director – Technical Sales and Marketing, Ravin Cables. With his extensive industrial experience, Mr. Ramrakhiani delivered an insightful session covering the complete lifecycle of electrical cables, from raw material selection to final testing and market applications. He elaborated on various types of cables used in power systems, industrial installations, and domestic wiring, emphasizing the importance of compliance with national and international standards.

The workshop was coordinated by Prof. Manjusha A. Kanawade, Faculty Advisor – IEEE PES SBC, and Prof. Pawan Bhujabale. The event was graced by Dr. S. L. Chavan, Head of the Department, Electrical Engineering, along with other faculty members. Dr. Chavan addressed the students and highlighted the significance of industry–academia collaboration in developing practical skills and enhancing employability. His presence added academic value and encouraged students to actively engage in the learning process.

The workshop included both theoretical explanations and practical demonstrations. The key topics covered during the sessions were:

  • Basic structure and internal construction of electrical cables and wires
  • Types of conductors (copper, aluminum) and insulation materials
  • Sheathing, armoring, and protective layers in power cables
  • Voltage ratings and current carrying capacity of cables
  • Cable standards, specifications, and quality control practices
  • Safety precautions during cable installation and operation
  • Common faults in cables and preventive maintenance techniques

Real samples of electrical cables and wires were displayed, and their internal components were physically shown to the students. The resource person demonstrated how different layers of insulation and protection contribute to the performance, durability, and safety of cables. Students were also introduced to basic cable testing methods and quality assurance procedures followed in the industry. These demonstrations helped students clearly visualize theoretical concepts and understand their practical relevance. A total of 120 students from Second Year and Third Year Electrical Engineering attended the workshop. An interactive question and answer session was conducted, during which students asked questions related to cable selection, industrial applications, safety measures, and career opportunities in the electrical manufacturing sector.
