SoSs are the next level of integration of large systems such as telecommunication, aerospace and sensors to serve society better. They are emergent globally now. SoSs offer significant improvements in technical performance of whole societal functions such as Global/Region Energy, Healthcare, Transportation, Earth Observation and Prediction, Security and more that save lives and deliver better total-function performance. The earliest SoSs before even the term were in telecommunications and today deliver seamless, simple, global capabilities. GEOSS, Global Earth Observation SoS, is the world’s 1st named Sos, results in better, more integrated earth predictions such as weather and climate that affects everything. Another is military “Swarms†that rely on SoSs and communications.
About the Speaker:
In Boeing, Paul’s career spans defense, commercial and civil large-scale system & service development programs more than half of which were world firsts. His fields are systems-of-systems (SoSs), large-scale, complex system development and systems engineering including safety/failure modes. Programs include 787 GoldCare, GEOSS1/GOES-R, CbB, 777, 747-400, 737-300, 757/767, PICTUREPHONE, SAFEGUARD. He worked 3 of Boeing’s 4 SoS projects including bB, “Connexion-by-Boeingâ€, a world 1st, high bandwidth, global communication SoS service to anything that “moved†anywhere. He was Head Airplane Architect and Chief SoS Process Architect bringing together engineering, business ROI/NPV and market values into one decision process. On GEOSS, he was Chief Architect nd advanced Boeing into this new domain as it was being created at NOAA. He is currently SoS Architect-Engineer for Boeing’s 787 GoldCare/Fleet Management, a new, e-based, global, SoS service business for airline operations fleet maintenance. Earlier, Paul developed Boeing’s first intellectual capital offset program, and previously he worked performance and battle management for the world’s 1st Anti ballistic Missile System, SAFEGUARD. In IEEE, as part of Paul’s Boeing Fellowship activities, Paul held presidency positions in two IEEE business units: President of the Aerospace and Electronic Systems Society (AESS) and president, IEEE Systems Council.
