Online Training Workshop for Hack4Coverage: A Citizen Science Hackathon using GNET-Track
The Hack4Coverage: A Citizen Science Hackathon using GNET-Track was successfully conducted by the Centre of Research PAKET, UKM, in collaboration with Wireless@UKM Research Group, Sunway University, and supported by the IEEE Malaysia Communications Society and Vehicular Technology Society Joint Chapter (MyComVT) under the ENGAGE Scheme 2025. The initiative aimed to empower students, researchers, and community members to participate in citizen-driven data collection and analysis to map wireless network coverage across Malaysia.
The programme was conducted in three phases: an online training workshop on 8 October 2025, followed by a data collection and analysis period, and concluding with the Final Hackathon Showcase on 5 November 2025 at Akademi Siber Teknopolis, UKM. The workshop attracted strong interest with 117 pre-registrations and 90 online attendees, while the hackathon phase included 32 competing teams (75 students), culminating in 10 finalist teams (25 students) presenting their results to a panel of judges from academia and industry.
Participants used the GNET-Track mobile application to record real-world mobile coverage measurements, producing over 16,000 data points for mapping and research purposes. The programme also incorporated pre- and post-event surveys to gauge participants’ learning outcomes, confidence, and awareness. Early feedback suggests that the initiative has enriched understanding of citizen science, wireless communication, and open data methods beyond classroom learning.
