Officer Training Classes - 2026 (Focus: VTOOLS)

In 2026 we will offer ‘Officer Training’ to our ‘newly’ elected AND veteran officers and volunteers; as well as any IEEE member, at any grade level or position.  Our wish is to help all gain a fuller awareness of the communication and management skills used within the IEEE, how they function and how to employ them both as IEEE officers, and in your everyday work and life.  

Classes:

As an introduction to these skills, we will offer a sequence set of VIRTUAL classes supported by study materials available through the Southeastern Michigan Section website and the IEEE Center for Leadership Excellence.  The virtual classes will begin in the 2nd week of JANUARY 2026 and conclude end of FEBRUARY.  Each class will be conducted  as an overview of the topic ‘de jour’ and a discussion or Q&A session to answer questions and clarify issues. (See the agenda below:)     

Note: Space for these classes is not like outer space, it is limited, so you must register to receive the necessary codes and passwords to attend.

IEEE volunteer tools (vTools) site provides information on a wide range of tools developed by volunteers for IEEE members and IEEE volunteers.  The toolbox simplifies organizational efforts and administration by offering web-based software in order to reduce time spent on managing local activities and to assist in member development.

**The vTools are sponsored by IEEE Membership and Geographic Activities (MGA), which serves the needs of IEEE members by supporting IEEE Regions, Councils, Areas, Sections, Chapters, Affinity Groups, Student Branches, Student Branch Chapters and HKN Chapters and is responsible for IEEE membership, and member development.

Biography:

A seasoned scientifc, technical and computing professional, Sharan has spent over 25+ years implementing many new and pioneering technologies from operating systems (UNIX/BSD/UNICOS/Irix/Linux/Solaris/), high performance computing (Cray, SGI, various clusters), engineering applications (CAE/CFD simulation software), optimization, networking (TCP/IP, Infiniband), operations (ITIL, ITSM), scientific domain (BioInformatics), and project management. An inspiring speaker and author, Sharan looks to raise the professional approach of every individual he interacts with. He has worked in many diverse areas and is a sought after speaker at many conferences and seminars, such as Supercomputing, HPC Advisory Council, SIAM, Infiniband Trade Association, Association of Information Technology Professionals, etc.

He enjoys teaching, contributing to STEM activities and publishing. He is a senior member of IEEE, ACM, Emeritus member of Michigan!/usr/group (mug.org), and leads the SEMCO.ORG. He has published a book on the topic: "UNIX and TCP/IP network security" " ISBN: 1581430213; and is now working on his second text, about a new computer programming language. He has been the Chair of the IEEE Southeastern Michigan Section since November 2021 and has held various officer roles in different chapters of the Southeastern Michigan IEEE. He also serves as one of the writers/editors of the Sections monthly newsletter - Wavelengths. He has also served as Vice-Chair of IEEE Sustech 2022, IEEE SusTech 2021 Global Conferences.  Recently in 2023 and 2024 he also served as one of the organizers of the IEEE Online Forum for Climate Change Technologies. He is the recipient of:

* 2018 IEEE MGA Achievement award,
* 2021 IEEE Region 4 Jack Sherman award
* 2022 Robert Neff Section award
* 2023 IEEE Region 4 Outstanding Service Award
* 2024 Engineering Society of Detroit (ESD) Anne O. Fletcher Award

for his contributions towards Section, Regional, National and Global IEEE activities.

Biography:

Kimball Williams retired from DENSO as a “Technical Fellow” in 2012.

He is an IEEE Senior Life Member and Past Chair of the IEEE Southeastern Michigan Section.
He is a certified Master EMC Design Engineer and an ‘Honored Member’ of the IEEE EMC Society where he serves as one of the Past Presidents Emeritus.  He is also a Fellow of the Engineering Society of Detroit.
