Introduction to World-Class Supercomputing with the LUMI Supercomputer
The session titled “Introduction to World-Class Supercomputing with the LUMI Supercomputer” was successfully held on Tuesday, 30th December 2025, at the Smart Room of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, University of Peradeniya. The event was organized by the IEEE ComSoc Student Chapter with the objective of introducing students to modern High-Performance Computing (HPC) technologies and their real-world impact.
The session was conducted by Mr. Pramod Munaweera, Operations Manager of the LUMI Supercomputer, who provided an insightful overview of HPC fundamentals and the architecture of LUMI, one of the world’s most powerful and energy-efficient supercomputers. The speaker explained LUMI’s heterogeneous CPU–GPU design and highlighted how such architectures enable large-scale computations with high energy efficiency.
Furthermore, the talk explored diverse applications of supercomputing, including climate modeling, cancer research, artificial intelligence and large language models (LLMs), digital twins, and drug discovery. The session concluded with an interactive discussion where participants actively engaged with the speaker, clarifying technical concepts and learning about research and career opportunities in the field of supercomputing.
Overall, the event successfully enhanced participants’ understanding of advanced computing systems and inspired interest in high-performance computing and AI-driven research.

Introduction to World-Class Supercomputing with the LUMI Supercomputer
Supercomputing is a key enabler of breakthrough research and innovation across science, engineering,
and industry. This presentation introduces modern high-performance computing (HPC) through the
LUMI supercomputer, ranked #9th most powerful and one of the most energy-efficient supercomputers
globally. We will present the architecture of LUMI, including its heterogeneous CPU-GPU design, high-
performance storage, and software ecosystem, and explain how these capabilities support extreme-
scale computation and data-intensive workloads. The talk will highlight real-world use cases enabled by
LUMI, including climate and weather modeling, cancer research, digital twins for complex physical and
industrial systems, large-scale training of large language models and other Al systems, and accelerated
drug discovery. We will also discuss LUMI's role within the EuroHPC infrastructure, its sustainability-
driven design, and practical aspects of accessing and using the system. Attendees will gain a
foundational understanding of world-class supercomputing and how supercomputers empower cutting
edge research and industrial applications.
