Topic:

Electro-Thermal and Magneto-Optical Characterization of Unconventional Antiferromagnets

Unconventional antiferromagnets, including non-collinear octupolar systems and recently identified altermagnets, exhibit rich Berry-curvature-driven transport and optical phenomena despite having no net magnetization. A key challenge is how to experimentally access their hidden order parameters via macroscopic measurement. In this talk, the speaker will first discuss lock-in thermography imaging of magnetic octupole domains in non-collinear antiferromagnets via the anomalous Ettingshausen effect, enabling real-space visualization of domain configurations and reversal processes[1]. Then, the speaker will show how thermal contrast arising from the spin-dependent Peltier effect allows deterministic imaging of 0° and 180° Néel domains in altermagnets such as RuO₂[2]. Finally, the speaker will present magneto-optical Kerr measurements in hematite, demonstrating a Néel-order-dominated Kerr effect of altermagnetic origin[3]. Together, these results establish electro-thermal and optical responses as powerful probes of unconventional antiferromagnetic order.
