Beyond 5G: Future Networks, Real-World Innovation

Beyond 5G: Future Networks, Real-World Innovation The transition from 5G to 6G and NextG is often discussed in terms of technology, but its real impact lies in how it reshapes industries, cities, and engineering careers. This talk offers both technical and non-technical, experience-driven view of future networks, focusing on what these changes mean for both technology and engineering (education) roadmaps.
The session introduces the broad roadmap of future networks—5G today, 6G tomorrow, and NextG beyond—not as standards or specifications, but as enablers of new ways of working in mobility, smart infrastructure, manufacturing, and urban systems. Through concrete industrial use cases developed in real environments, the talk illustrates how communication networks become invisible but essential components of modern engineering solutions. Special attention is given to large-scale testbeds and living labs, such as CityLab, Smart Highway deployments, and NextG initiatives in Antwerp, showing how these environments connect research, education, industry, startups, and public authorities. These platforms not only accelerate innovation but also create new professional roles at the intersection of engineering, data, systems integration, and experimentation.
