3D Printing Lunch & Learn - APR 14
This event explores 3D Printing: creating a 3D model, exporting the model to an STL file, converting that file into data used by the 3D printer, the 3D printer in action, and a Q&A session about additive manufacturing.
In the morning, we will learn how to use FreeCAD to create a 3D model. You will need a computer with FreeCAD 1.0.2 already installed. FreeCAD is available for Windows, Mac, and Linux computers. It's free to download from FreeCAD.org. (If you don't have a laptop, contact me. I know of one or two that might be available.)
We will be using the meeting room at the Reading Branch Library as our classroom. The meeting room is to your left upon entering the library. There is plenty of parking.
The library opens at 10:00 am. Please be set up and ready to go by 10:30. If your computer needs power, you might consider bringing an extension cord just in case. We will begin by introducing the FreeCAD environment. And then you will draw a 3D model that uses many features of FreeCAD. You will export that model to an STL file, which you could print at a Makerspace (such as the Main Library downtown or the Loveland Library). After that, we will explore more 2D drafting features of FreeCAD. Collectively, the features we explore will give you the ability to draw 90% of anything you wish to draw.
Lunch: Nearby is Gyro Subs, which has a $10 lunch combo (sandwich, fries, and drink). Gyros, burgers, Philly steak, chicken, and more. We are allowed to eat in the meeting room. Other restaurants are nearby, including a Subway.
After lunch, we will go to Make Anything Solutions in Lockland (6 Kovach Drive), which is a 3D Printing Services startup with a variety of 3D printers. Andrey Feldman will give us a tour and answer questions about additive manufacturing. We should see some printers in action (hopefully printing the part from our tutorial).
