Topic:

Data Centers and Their Impact on The Bulk Electric System and The US Energy Grid

§  The rapid growth of Data Centers in the US is considered the single largest driver of the projected peak load demand growth on the Bulk Electric System (BES).

§  The massive growth in the peak load demand required to support these new and often massive large load centers present unprecedented challenges to the Bulk Electric System (BES).

§  These unprecedented challenges have prompted discussions about the impact of these Data Centers on a wide range of issues; reliability and stability of the US energy grid, electric energy price hikes, impact on communities, environmental impact, …etc.

§  Recognizing the importance and the critical nature of some of these challenges, Electric System Grid Regulators, Regional Transmission Organizations, Electric Utilities, Local and State Governments are all trying to address some of those challenges.

§  In this presentation, we will highlight some of the technical design aspects, and load demand requirements for Data Center that pose some challenges to the existing electric grid infrastructure. Also, we will try to take a closer look at some of those challenges and how they are being addressed.
