IEEE Life Members Africa Council Affinity Group Presentation
The IEEE Life Members Africa Council Affinity Group Session, organized as a side event of the EDUCON 2026 Conference in Cairo on 29 April, will bring together distinguished scholars, practitioners, and members of the IEEE Life Member community to explore the evolving role of life members in advancing education, research, and societal impact across Region 8 and beyond.
The session will open at 11:00 AM with welcoming remarks and an introduction by Prof. Manuel Castro, who will set the stage by highlighting the mission and growing importance of IEEE Life Member Affinity Groups in fostering continued professional engagement, mentorship, and knowledge exchange among senior members.
At 11:05 AM, Prof. Peter Magyar will provide an overview of IEEE Life Member activities within Region 8, offering insights into ongoing initiatives, regional collaboration opportunities, and the strategic role of life members in supporting IEEE’s global vision.
The technical program will begin at 11:15 AM with a featured presentation titled “Mobility, a Biomarker for Healthy Aging – A Data-Driven Approach: Comparative Analysis on Country and City Level,” delivered by Prof. Andreas Pester and Prof. Hesham Al. This talk will explore how mobility patterns can serve as key indicators of healthy aging, supported by data-driven methodologies and comparative perspectives across different geographic contexts. The presentation is expected to stimulate interdisciplinary discussion at the intersection of technology, health, and societal development.
At 11:45 AM, Prof. Kouzou Abdallah, current Chair of the IEEE Life Members Africa Council Affinity Group, will deliver a dedicated presentation on the Africa Council Affinity Group. His talk will provide a comprehensive overview of the group’s structure, mission, and current status, while outlining key achievements and strategic priorities. In addition, he will present the planned activities for 2026, highlighting opportunities for engagement, collaboration, and the continued growth of the Life Member community across Africa.
The session will conclude at 12:30 PM with an interactive questions and comments segment, offering participants the opportunity to engage with speakers, share perspectives, and explore future collaboration avenues.
Overall, this session aims to strengthen the visibility and impact of IEEE Life Members within Africa and Region 8, while fostering meaningful dialogue on how their experience and expertise can contribute to addressing contemporary challenges in education, technology, and society.

Prof. Kouzou Abdallah, current Chair of the IEEE Life Members Africa Council Affinity Group, will deliver a dedicated presentation on the Africa Council Affinity Group. His talk will provide a comprehensive overview of the group’s structure, mission, and current status, while outlining key achievements and strategic priorities. In addition, he will present the planned activities for 2026, highlighting opportunities for engagement, collaboration, and the continued growth of the Life Member community across Africa.
Biography:
Mr Kouzou Abdallah (IEEE Senior member & IACSIT Senior member, IFAC, IAENG & IISRO member, IEEE-HKN Alumni Member) was born in Djelfa, Algeria in 1964. He is actually a Full Professor at the University of Djelfa, Algeria. He was the president of the Scientific Council of the faculty of Sciences and Technology from 2014 to 2015 and the Dean of the same faculty from 2015 to 2017. He has participated in several research projects and has led several research projects. He was a researcher with Technische Universität Muenchen (TUM) in Germany from 2010 to 2012. He was a collaborator researcher at Texas A&M University at Qatar. He was a collaborator researcher with Qatar University where he participated in some projects. He has participated in many collaborations with other university such as in Spain, Poland, Bulgaria and Turkey. He is a Part-time Professor at PAUWES (PAN Africa University, Institute of Water and energy Sciences (including climate change). He is a visiting and adjunct professor at some universities such as in Poland and Turkey. He is a visiting professor at Gdansk university of Technology, Poland. He was the founder of the Power Electronics and Power Quality research group at the Applied Automation and Industrial Diagnostic Laboratory, University of Djelfa in Algeria. He is the supervisor of many PhD Students and Master Students in Algeria. He is a member of many editorial boards for several scientific journals and a member of the scientific and steering committees in several national and international conferences. He is the chair of several international conferences. He is Guest editor with many reputed journals. He is the Chair of the Algerian IEEE Section Power Electronics Chapter. He is the chair of the sub-committee on FACTs and HVDC under the international committee PETC/IEEE-IES. He was the Treasurer of the IEEE Africa Council. He is currently the IEEE Algeria Section Chair and the IEEE Africa Council Chair. He was a member of Conference Coordination Committee (CoCC) at IEEE Region 8. He is a AdHoc member of the Climate Change Committee with IEEE R8. He is member of LMAG at IEEE-R8, and the interim chair of Africa LMAGs. He is the National Contact Point (NCP) in Algeria within the European Horizon Projects 2022-2027 on Renewable energy and Sustainability. He is a Leader –Author at IPCC under climate change working group. He is member of the Technical Committee on Railway Electrification at IEEE Transportation Electrification Council. He is the current Chair of the IEEE Power Electronics Chapter and the Intelligent Transportation Systems Chapter. He was a plenary and an invited keynote speaker and session chair in several national and international conferences and experts in several national and international scientific activities and project evaluations. He is an expert with the ministry of high education and scientific research in Algeria on Socio-economic projects. He was also a visiting professor at several international universities. He participated in many international PHD dissertation committees. He was the leader of several research project in Algeria. He is actually participating in a joint project with the main company of petrol and gas in Algeria, where he is leading research group on diagnosis and control of gas turbine used in power generation system and compression stations. He was the Chair of the working group on decarbonisation of Transport in Africa. He external expert in a project at Hail University in KSA. He is an expert with European Union Research projects. He is an expert on Climate change, especially of decarbonisation of transport systems. He has published more than 540 papers, his main research interests include Active Power Filtering techniques, Power Quality issues, Power Electronics Devices, Application of Power electronics in Renewable Energies, Materials for multi-layers coating in PV cells. Multi-phase machines, Sensorless control, Electrical vehicles and unmanned vehicles, Application of meta-heuristics optimization algorithms, Application of AI in Energy source and Power electronics control, Smart Grid and Smart Buildings, reliability and diagnostics in power electronics converters and in other industrial applications, Non Destructive Testing and Measurement Techniques, Diagnosis and control of Gas Turbine of high power.
