Energy Management Using Battery Storage for Peak Shaving and Price-Based Demand Response
This talk presents the energy management framework focused on peak shaving and price-based demand response. Peak shaving helps in reducing the maximum grid power demand and demand response lowers energy costs by scheduling batteries based on electricity price signals. The approach considers forecasts of input powers and electricity price, battery state of charge, and operational constraints to ensure optimal performance. Case studies show noticeable reductions in peak demand, energy costs, and grid stress, along with improvements in voltage profiles. The application of peak shaving in both isolated and grid-connected distribution systems is also discussed to highlight its practical relevance. Overall, energy management is well suited for modern distribution systems and DISCOMs which support higher renewable integration, greater operational flexibility, and a smoother transition toward sustainable energy systems.
