Introduction to IEC-61850
This introductory session on lEC 61850 will provide a high-level overview of the standard and its role in modern substation automation. The presentation will cover key concepts such as logical nodes, data models, and communication services (including GOOSE), along with how IEC 61850 enables interoperability between protection, control, and communication systems.
Attendees will gain a foundational understanding of how the standard is applied in real-world utility environments and why it is critical to grid modernization efforts.
Biography:
Brian Ciccariello is a Telecommunications Engineer at Burns & McDonnell with over two decades of experience designing and implementing communication networks for critical infrastructure. His expertise includes substation and wide-area network design, secure system integration, and supporting grid modernization initiatives across utility environments. Brian has supported numerous utility projects integrating protection, control, and communications using IEC 61850, bringing practical, real-world insight into how these systems are applied in the field. He is passionate about helping teams understand and adopt modern grid communication standards.
