Planetary vs. Earth Remote Sensing: Similar Tools, Different Challenges
Biography:
Dr. Gayantha R. L. Kodikara is a geoscientist specializing in planetary geoscience, remote sensing, and data-driven Earth system analysis. He is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Oceanography and Marine Geology at the University of Ruhuna, Sri Lanka.
He completed his PhD and postdoctoral research at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, USA, focusing on palaeolacustrine environments on Mars. He also holds a dual master's degrees from the Netherlands and India, with research on mineral mapping of Lake Magadi, Kenya, and the Moon using hyperspectral data.
His research integrates Earth and planetary remote sensing, geochemical modeling, and machine and deep learning to characterize surface processes, with an emphasis on bridging methodologies between planetary exploration and terrestrial environmental systems.
