Roberto Petroccia, Ph.D.
Biography:
Roberto Petroccia received his Laurea degree with highest honors and Ph.D. in Computer Science from
the University of Rome “La Sapienza” in 2006 and 2010. Since 2015, he has been a Scientist at the
NATO Science and Technology Organization Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation in La
Spezia, Italy, where he leads work on underwater communications and networks and supports activities
on interoperability and security of unmanned systems. His research focuses on underwater
communications, networking, wireless sensor networks, interoperability, and security. He has published
over 100 papers and participated in more than 40 sea trials testing innovative underwater technologies.
He has also led NATO panels and programs on digital underwater communications and maritime
unmanned systems, coordinating contributions from nations, academia, and industry. Dr. Petroccia has
served in IEEE OES roles including AdCom member and Young Professionals coordinator, and has
contributed to several IEEE/MTS OCEANS, IEEE UComms, and ACM WUWNet events. He is an IEEE Senior
Member, IEEE OES Distinguished Lecturer, and invited lecturer at the University of Pisa, the University of
Calabria, and the Italian Navy Academy.
