Grid Modernisation in Pakistan and a case study on the impact of the solar boom impact
Exploring grid modernisation and the impact of solar integration in Pakistan
The IEEE Power & Energy Society (PES) UET Faisalabad, in collaboration with IEEE UET Faisalabad Student Branch presents a technical session on “Grid Modernisation in Pakistan & Case Study on Solar Boom Impact,” delivered by Engr. Wajahat Saleem Hashmi, Deputy Manager at National Grid Company of Pakistan (NGCP).
The session explores the evolving dynamics of Pakistan’s power system, highlighting the increasing need for grid modernization to ensure reliable, efficient, and sustainable operation. It covers key aspects of the national grid, including transmission infrastructure, system operation, and the challenges associated with aging networks, rising demand, and the integration of advanced monitoring and control mechanisms.
A central focus of the session is the rapid expansion of solar energy across the country and its implications for grid performance. The discussion examines technical challenges such as intermittency, voltage regulation issues, reverse power flows, reduced system inertia, and load unpredictability. Practical, case-based insights are used to illustrate how large-scale and distributed solar integration affects both transmission and distribution networks.
In addition, the session highlights modern approaches being adopted to address these challenges, including smart grid technologies, real-time data acquisition systems, enhanced forecasting methods, and improved grid planning strategies. Emphasis is placed on how these solutions contribute to system stability, operational flexibility, and long-term energy sustainability.
Overall, the session provides a comprehensive understanding of current grid challenges in Pakistan and the technical considerations required for effective renewable energy integration, while also emphasizing the critical role of engineers in shaping a resilient and future-ready power system.
