3rd Annual IEEE LSS EMB Workshop on AI and Healthcare
IEEE Lone Star Section EMBS Chapter and the Life Members Affinity Group will host the 3nd Annual Workshop on AI and Healthcare. Event will be held in conjunction with the Computer Sciences Department's Research Day and Poster Presentations. The website for the event is as follows:

Like last year, the purpose of the workshop is to assemble engineers and scientists with an interest in Artificial Intelligence (AI) as applied to the field of healthcare. The workshop is expected to also expand interest in EMB activities across several technical chapters, affinity groups and Section members. Additionally, the event will focus on expanding interest in EMB for students and faculty at the many academic institutions within the Lone Star Section. In addition the event will include Texas State University in San Marcos (Central Texas Section), with emphasis on its very active IEEE faculty and student branch.
The workshop will featuring a Keynote, Panel Discussion, and Poster session at the Texas State University STAR Park Conference facility in San Marcos, Texas on December 3, 2026. (Room 173, 174 and 105)

Dr. David Holmes

Biography:
David R. Holmes III, Ph.D. is a Professor of Biomedical Engineering at Mayo Clinic. He studies the methods by which healthcare researchers analyze and interpret large data sets. Dr. Holmes conducts his research from the perspective that data drives decisions. In the case of personal health, individual and population-based data can inform health decisions, disease characterization and therapy planning. The use of Artificial Intelligence in healthcare has revolutionized biomedical research and clinical care, allowing for real-time mining the clinical and imaging data that exist within the electronic medical record yielding better-individualized strategies for patient health.
An experienced educator, Dr. Holmes has mentored students across various levels, many of whom have received prestigious fellowships and hold leadership positions in academia and industry. Dr. Holmes is also the Program Director for the Mayo Graduate School Masters of Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare. This unique educational program trains future clinical practitioners, biomedical scientists, and healthcare leaders to adopt an integrated approach to improving human health which leverages Artificial Intelligence principles and tools in clinical care, discovery science, and healthcare decision making.
Beyond academia, Dr. Holmes actively contributes to the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society, serving as Chair of the IEEE Southern Minnesota Section EMBS Chapter. He leads community outreach initiatives, including the IEEE Science Movie Night, engaging students in biomedical engineering. His dedication to research, education, and outreach reinforces his impact on healthcare innovation and mentorship.
