Join the IEEE Québec Section Photonics Chapter for an informal meetup and snack, held alongside Photonics North 2026 in the Main Exhibition Hall of the Québec City Convention Centre.

The newly launched Québec City Photonics Chapter welcomes you at this official event. This is a great opportunity to connect with IEEE members, discover the activities of photonics chapters across Canada, and hear from a world-class researcher working at the frontier of quantum photonics.

  Speakers

Frederic Grillot of Université Laval

Topic:

Semiconductor-based Quantum Photonics: From Quantum Dot Lasers to Secure Communications

The presentation will provide an overview of my recent research activities in quantum photonics, particularly those related to quantum dot lasers, non-classical light generation, and secure quantum communications. I will also outline the new International Associated Laboratory (LIA-PIQ) between Université Laval and Télécom Paris, as well as the associated collaboration and development prospects.

Biography:

Frédéric Grillot is a full professor of quantum photonics at Université Laval since March 2025 and a research affiliate at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) since January 2025. He earned a Master of Science degree from the Université de Bourgogne in Dijon in 1999, followed by a PhD from the University of Franche-Comté in Besançon in 2003. He then obtained his Habilitation à Diriger des Recherches (HDR) from the Université de Paris in 2012.

During his career, he held research positions at the Centre de Nanosciences et de Nanotechnologies (C2N) at Université Paris-Saclay in 2003, then at the Institut National des Sciences Appliquées (INSA) in Rennes between 2004 and 2011, before joining Télécom Paris in 2012, where he became a professor in 2017.

Professor Grillot was a visiting researcher at the University of New Mexico (USA) between 2008 and 2009, at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in 2017, at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) in 2023 and 2024, as well as, at the Politecnico di Milano in 2023 and the Politecnico di Torino in 2024.

His research focuses primarily on semiconductor photonic devices, quantum dot lasers, optical communications, as well as nonlinear phenomena and quantum noise in semiconductor lasers. Throughout his career, he has published over 150 articles in international scientific journals and three chapters in specialized books.

Professor Grillot is an IEEE Distinguished Lecturer, a Fellow of SPIE and Optica, and member of the IEEE Photonics Society Board of Governors.
