The 2026 IEEE INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP “Biomedical Applications, Technologies and Sensors” (BATS 2026) will take place in Naples on October 15–16, 2026, bringing together researchers, engineers, clinicians and industry professionals working at the intersection of sensing technologies, photonics, electronics and medicine.

Now in its 9th edition, BATS has established itself as an important international forum for discussing emerging technologies and innovative biomedical applications, with a strong emphasis on interdisciplinary collaboration and technology transfer. Hosted at the University of Naples “Parthenope”, the workshop will offer a vibrant environment for scientific exchange through invited lectures, oral presentations, poster sessions and networking opportunities.

The workshop focuses on a broad range of topics spanning modern sensing systems and biomedical engineering, including sensor technologies and characterization, physical, chemical and biosensors, wearable and flexible systems, artificial intelligence and IoT for healthcare, therapeutic and diagnostic systems, rehabilitation technologies, signal processing, and energy harvesting solutions.

For the photonics community, BATS 2026 represents an exciting opportunity to explore how optical technologies are increasingly contributing to next-generation healthcare solutions. From optical biosensors and wearable photonic devices to advanced imaging systems and intelligent diagnostic platforms, the workshop highlights the growing role of photonics in enabling precision medicine, digital health and personalized care.

The event also places strong attention on collaboration between academia and industry, fostering discussions on translational research and real-world applications. Researchers at all career stages, including students and early-career scientists, are encouraged to participate and contribute their work. Accepted and presented papers will be submitted for inclusion in the IEEE Xplore Digital Library, subject to IEEE quality requirements.

Important deadlines for BATS 2026 include:

  • Special Session Proposal Deadline: April 30, 2026
  • Extended Abstract Submission Deadline: May 30, 2026
  • Acceptance Notification: July 15, 2026
  • Final Paper Submission Deadline: September 6, 2026

Beyond the scientific program, participants will also have the opportunity to experience the unique atmosphere of Naples, a city renowned for its history, culture, innovation and Mediterranean hospitality.
