The development of mobile communication standards and the progress into 6G
The talk will elaborate the intricate process of creating mobile communication standards and shed light on how 4G, 5G and beyond go from research, to reality. We will discuss the concept of communication standards and look at some prominent examples, before focusing on mobile communication standards and examining the role regional Standards Development Organisations, 3GPP, and regulators play in the complex telecoms ecosystem. We will look at some concrete, real-life examples of technical and pragmatic decisions that need to be taken during the creation of mobile standards, and how they impact the overall design of mobile networks and devices and the services they offer. And finally, we will look at what careers in communication standards can look like, and the different roles and career paths within the ecosystem, while examining the impact of AI and the emergence of 6G.
