Wearable and Smart Device Challenge
The Wearable and Smart Device Challenge (Official website), organized within the framework of IEEE MetroInd 2026, is an international competition focused on the design and development of innovative wearable and smart systems for healthcare, wellness, and human activity monitoring applications.
The challenge aims to foster the development of non-invasive, portable, and user-oriented technologies capable of acquiring reliable physiological, biomechanical, and behavioral data through the integration of advanced sensing solutions and wireless communication systems. Participating teams are encouraged to propose original prototypes able to monitor parameters such as respiratory activity, heart rate, body movements, temperature, blood pressure, or other indicators related to daily life activities and human behavior.
Open to BSc, MSc, and PhD students, the initiative represents an opportunity to combine engineering, sensing technologies, embedded systems, data acquisition, and Industry 4.0 paradigms in a highly multidisciplinary environment. Teams will present their projects through live demonstrations and poster sessions, showcasing the real-time operation, usability, and technological innovation of their proposed systems.
Projects will be evaluated according to several criteria, including system performance, originality, ease of assembly and use, and effectiveness of the presentation. Beyond the competitive aspect, the challenge promotes collaboration and interaction between students, researchers, academia, and industry professionals working in the fields of wearable technologies, smart sensing systems, metrology, and IoT.
The event will take place on June 10, 2026, at Cu.Bo. Building (Università Campus Bio-Medico di Roma, via Alvaro del Portillo 21, 00128, Rome RM), as part of the official program of IEEE MetroInd 2026.
