The IEEE Orange County MTT-S Chapter, in partnership with the IEEE UC Irvine Student Branch, hosted an industry talk titled “The RF Frontier: Careers in the Next Generation of Wireless” on May 29, 2026. The session was delivered by Abin Mathew, Sr. RF Design Engineer and Module Lead at Skyworks Solutions, and Chair of the IEEE OC MTT-S Chapter.
The presentation was structured in two parts. The first focused on breaking into the RF industry — covering how engineering opportunities actually arise, what hiring managers look for in undergraduate candidates, what to expect in RF technical interviews, and how to navigate the first six months on the job. The second part explored the future of RF and wireless, including six trends shaping the next decade: 6G and FR3 spectrum, phased array beamforming entering consumer devices, non-terrestrial networks, integrated sensing and communications (ISAC), RF + AI/ML, and GaN-based advanced semiconductors.
The session also highlighted IEEE MTT-S resources available to students — scholarships, fellowships, chapter funding, technical materials, and the IMS Student Design Competitions. The event concluded with an interactive Q&A, and discussions are now underway regarding the formation of an MTT-S Student Branch Chapter at UCI.
