The 6th Algerian Geoscience and Remote Sensing Summer School (AGRS3S) is organized by the Laboratory of Image Processing and Radiation (LTIR), Faculty of Electrical Engineering, University of Sciences and Technology Houari Boumediene (USTHB), the “Ecole Nationale Supérieure des TIC et de la Poste” (ENSTICP), Algiers, the IEEE-GRSS Algeria Chapter, and the Algerian Association of Geoscience and Remote Sensing (AAGRS).
The 6th AGR3S will be held from 12 to 15 September, 2026, at the USTHB, Algeria. It brings together internationally recognized researchers, engineers, students and industrial partners working in space technologies, Earth observation, and AI systems. Four days of advanced lectures, hands-on workshops and scientific exchange around AI-driven geospatial analysis.

Vahid Akbari of Stirling university

Remote sensing and Artificial intelligence

Biography:

Vahid Akbari is a Lecturer (Assistant Professor) in Data Science/Artificial Intelligence at the University of Stirling. he received the Ph.D. degree in physics with a specialisation in radar remote sensing and data analytics from the UiT—The Arctic University of Norway, Tromsø, Norway, in 2013.

Since 2014, he continued my research in radar remote sensing and machine learning as a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow with the UiT—The Arctic University of Norway, the Norwegian Institute of Bioeconomy Research, and the University of Stirling.

He has been a Visiting Scientist with the Signal Processing and Telecommunications Laboratory, Department of Electrical, Electronic, Telecommunications Engineering and Naval Architecture, University of Genoa, Genoa, Italy, in 2011, and a Visiting Researcher with the German Geoscience Center (GFZ), Potsdom, Germany, in 2008.

He is also a Council Member of the Remote Sensing and Photogrammetry Society (RSPSoc), U.K.

His primary research interests revolve around the intersection of radar remote sensing and statistical modelling/machine learning, with a particular focus on the applications in environmental monitoring.

His research interests lie at the intersection between machine learning and Earth Observation for environmental monitoring. Specifically, He has focused on the applications of Interferometric SAR (InSAR) for land subsidence monitoring and Polarimetric SAR (PolSAR) for target detection, change detection, and land cover classification. Additionally, my work involves developing novel methods in machine learning, signal and Image processing, and data analytics for multidimensional SAR data. Furthermore, He is actively engaged in the field of big Earth data analytics with SAR for forestry, glaciology, and agriculture monitoring. In summary his research is focused on the following area:

•Artificial intelligence for Earth Observation (AI4EO)

•Big EO data analytics

•Advanced InSAR and PolSAR techniques for environmental monitoring.

He is a member of the Data Science and Intelligent Systems (DAIS) Earth and Planetary Observation Research Groups. He is also a member of the Stirling Vision and Image Processing Group (SVIP).

Adriano Camps of UPC University

Topic:

New space technologies: CubSats, GNSS-R and Microwave Radiometry



Biography:

Adriano Camps joined the Department of Signal Theory and Communications at Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) as Assistant Professor in 1993, Associate Professor in 1997, and has been Full Professor since 2007. He spent a sabbatical in 1999 at the Microwave Remote Sensing Lab, University of Massachusetts Amherst, and since September 2022 has been an ASPIRE Visiting International Professor at UAE University (Al Ain, Abu Dhabi).

His research focuses on microwave remote sensing, especially microwave radiometry by aperture synthesis (MIRAS instrument for ESA’s SMOS mission), remote sensing using signals of opportunity (GNSS-R), radio frequency interference detection and mitigation, ionospheric propagation, and nanosatellites for innovative remote sensing missions.

He has authored over 268 peer-reviewed journal papers, 9 book chapters, and the book Introduction to Satellite Remote Sensing: Atmosphere, Ocean, Land and Cryosphere Applications (Elsevier, 2017, 860 pages). He has also delivered more than 541 conference presentations. His Google Scholar/Scopus h-index is 63/48, with over 15,665/10,817 citations. According to the 2023 Stanford ranking, he is among the top 2% of researchers worldwide.

Prof. Camps holds 12 patents and has supervised 30 PhD theses (+10 ongoing) and over 150 MSc/BSc theses. His former students now hold positions in universities, research centers, and companies such as NASA/JPL, ESA, and Airbus, and two have founded companies in which he has participated, with five patents transferred.

He was Scientific Coordinator of the CommSensLab Research Center (María de Maeztu Excellence Unit 2016–2020) at UPC, co-leading the Remote Sensing Lab and heading the UPC NanoSat Lab. He is Principal Investigator of several nanosatellite missions: 3Cat-1, 3Cat-2, 3Cat-4, FSSCAT (3Cat-5A/B), and the IEEE/GRSS Open PocketQube Kit (PoCat series). FSSCAT, winner of the 2017 Copernicus Masters, was the first CubeSat-based mission contributing to the Copernicus system and produced scientific-quality global products such as soil moisture, sea ice extent and concentration, sea ice thickness, and sea salinity.

He has held multiple leadership roles in major conferences, including chairing uCal 2001, co-chairing IGARSS 2007 and IGARSS 2020, GNSS-R 2010, and other international workshops. He has been active in technical program committees of IGARSS since 2000 and other conferences such as MicroRad, M2GARSS, and URSI Spain events.

Prof. Camps has served as Associate Editor for Radio Science, IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Letters, and IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing, and guest editor for several IEEE and MDPI special issues. He founded the IEEE GRSS Spain Chapter, serves as counselor of the IEEE Student Branch at UPC, and was President of the IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society (2017–2018).
