AI for kids: train your own simple AI
Have you ever wondered how AI learns? In this hands-on activity, children become AI trainers for a day!
Using Google's Teachable Machine — a free, visual, and beginner-friendly tool — kids teach a computer to recognise images, sounds, or poses simply by showing examples. No coding needed, just curiosity and creativity.
What children will do: Collect examples by taking photos or recording sounds, train their own AI model in the browser, test it and see how it reacts, then improve it by adding more examples — just like real AI engineers do.
What children will discover: The more examples you give, the smarter your AI becomes. AI learns from people — which means people can also make it fairer and better.
Why it matters: This activity brings AI from something mysterious and distant to something children can touch, shape, and understand. It sparks the key insight at the heart of AI Equity — AI is not magic, it is a mirror of the people who build it.
Age: 7–12 Duration: 45–60 minutes
Tools: Teachable Machine by Google (teachablemachine.withgoogle.com)
Equipment: Laptop or tablet with a camera, browser
