The IEEE Student Branch Chapter Communications and Vehicular Technology Societies of the University of Aveiro invites students, researchers, IEEE members, and professionals to an in-person technical seminar with Professor Augusto Venâncio Neto on the role of open networking in future communications systems.

Organized in collaboration with the IEEE Communications Society Portugal Chapter and the IEEE Vehicular Technology Society Portugal Chapter, this event provides an opportunity to discuss how open, programmable, and disaggregated network architectures are reshaping telecommunications. The talk will address key concepts and emerging initiatives such as Open RAN, CAMARA APIs, and the Open Gateway initiative, while connecting them to broader trends in network programmability, multi-domain integration, and the convergence of fixed, mobile, and satellite systems.

Taking place during Professor Neto’s visit to Europe, the session will include a 45-minute technical presentation followed by a 15-minute Q&A with the local IEEE and academic communities. The discussion will offer participants the opportunity to engage directly with current research.

Registration is mandatory for all participants so that the organization can properly plan logistics and prepare the coffee break following the talk. Participants are kindly asked to register in advance and update their registration if their availability changes.

Topic:

Open Networking: The Role in Future Communications

This talk explores the role of open networking in shaping the future of telecommunications. It begins with a brief historical overview and presents adoption statistics, core concepts, and emerging technologies such as Open RAN, CAMARA APIs, and the Open Gateway initiative. The discussion highlights network disaggregation, the use of open and programmable interfaces, and the convergence of fixed, mobile, and satellite systems to achieve universal, high-capacity connectivity. Finally, it also examines market projections, benefits such as cost reduction and innovation, and global adoption trends illustrated through examples from Brazil and abroad.

Biography:

Professor Augusto Venâncio Neto Augusto Venâncio Neto is a Full Professor at the Department of Informatics and Applied Mathematics (DIMAp) of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN), specializing in Computer Networks and Distributed Systems. He is an IEEE Senior Member, CNPq's Productivity Research Fellow level 2, and an IEEE ComSoc Distinguished Lecturer for the term 2023-2024 and 2026-2027.
