Dr. Aaron Carman
New Radar Technology and Measurement of Human Respiration Frequency
As the number of connected devices increases, we are realizing that the electromagnetic spectrum is a finite resource that demands conservation. Existing works have leveraged advanced radar systems to perform sensing using ubiquitous wireless signals but have so far not demonstrated the level of practicality needed for future use cases due to large, expensive components used in existing designs. This talk discusses emerging radar sensing architectures that leverage passive sensing paradigms, new beamforming techniques, and low-cost fast-startup systems to improve the utility and applicability of low-cost radar sensors. A prototype beamforming passive radar is also discussed, with results showing the ability to localize the angular position of a human target while simultaneously measuring its respiration frequency without contributing to spectrum congestion.
Biography:
Aaron Carman is a Senior Radar Signal Processing Engineer at Ideal Innovations, Inc. Prior to joining Ideal Innovations, Aaron was a student contractor for the DEVCOM Army Research Laboratory and a research assistant at Texas Tech University. He received his Ph.D. from Texas Tech University, with a focus on novel microwave radar technologies.
He has over 8 years of experience in radar research, ranging from research with the RF and Analog Research Group and Center for Nanophotonics at Texas Tech University, the Defense & Security division of the Southwest Research Institute, and the Network, Electronic Warfare, and Cyber Sciences Division of the DEVCOM Army Research Laboratory.
Outside of his research pursuits, Dr. Carman has dedicated a considerable amount of time to teaching. He has volunteered as a lecture assistant for several courses at Texas Tech University and has made publicly available tutorials focusing on microwave circuit design, integrated circuit design, and basic electronics. Aaron is also the Media Coordinator for the Transactions on Microwave Theory and Techniques.
