Smart Mission Design: Bridging Space Engineering, Systems Thinking, and Intelligent Computation

The design of modern space missions demands more than classical systems engineering, it requires intelligent, adaptive, and data-driven decision-making. Missions today face increasing complexity, tighter budgets, shorter timelines, and the need to operate autonomously in dynamic environments. To meet these challenges, engineers must move beyond traditional, sequential design approaches toward smarter, more integrated methodologies.

Smart Mission Design (SMD) is an emerging interdisciplinary approach that unites space engineering, systems engineering, and computer science to transform how missions are conceived, analysed, and optimized. By combining computational intelligence (CI), and digital engineering, SMD enables rapid tradespace exploration, predictive analysis, and informed decision-making across the mission lifecycle.

This talk introduces the principles and workflow of Smart Mission Design, demonstrating how intelligent tools can accelerate design iteration, enhance mission resilience, and reduce cost and risk. Examples from previous and recent research in system tradespace exploration and AI/CI-driven mission decision support illustrate how this integrated approach can unlock the next generation of agile and reliable space systems.

Biography:

Dr Lily Qiao is a Senior Lecturer in Space Systems Engineering at the School of Engineering and Technology, UNSW Canberra. She received her PhD in Guidance, Navigation and Control in 2011. Her research interests include spacecraft autonomous navigation, GNSS and AI/CI-enabled systems design. She has contributed to Australian space mission research and has published 75 papers in journals and conferences. Dr Qiao currently serves as Program Committee Chair of the Australian Space Research Conference and is an IEEE Senior Member with leadership roles in the IEEE Aerospace and Electronic Systems Society (AESS) and IEEE ACT Section.
